If you lose 3 hearts with a character and REALLY want them back you can jump to the point to recruit them but recruiting them in this way (post unit death losing 3 hearts) means you're getting a 'fresh' one that must be trained again. Basically your roster is saved/keyed to the Warren Report so even characters you already recruited, but dying as guests in scenarios you have yet to play won't remove them from your army.
